Journey update, week 11

Until today, it has been a very boring work week as school performance practice meant no lessons for a full seven days. Desk warming can be a blessing when you want to get stuff done, but when that stuff is done it’s pretty mind numbing!

However, today it culminated in one of the most exciting days I’ve had at school yet. Performance day! It was so entertaining and awesome to see all my students showing off their talents and having an amazing time doing it. Especially when you see a really unmotivated, ‘naughty’ kid rock out on the recorder like they’ve been doing it since they were two (actually, they probably have). I did not know the recorder could sound so impressive! There was traditional fan dancing, some hilarious K-Pop with 6th grade homeroom teachers as extras and a whole lot of clapping and spotlights. It was great.

This weekend was also great, seeing us revisit our favourite city in Korea (so far), Busan. We went with our friend Ben, who started off the weekend on a high by winning 1million won in the casino!

We talked about falling in love with Haeundae previously, and this time round we headed out from there on foot to the furthest areas of the city to visit Yongungsa, a stunning temple built right on the cliff facing out to sea. We also discovered something even more special, that we are sure to revisit each time we are in Busan. A microbrewery. A microbrewery serving IPA. We were in heaven. Korean beer leaves a lot to be desired, although that doesn’t stop us desiring it most evenings… So having real, great beer was just lovely!

Here is a photo of said beer…

Another notable moment from this week was playing in the falling autumn leaves with the students at my rural school. I think this picture conveys exactly how sweet a 15 minutes it was…

And now to finish this week’s update, here are the show stoppers. Aka Oli’s non-IPhone pictures…

The detail of the temples never fails to impress

One last mention has to be the incredible rooftop ‘kids zone’ we stumbled across in the world’s biggest department store. It had a climbable pirate ship, elephants spraying water and a full on ‘African village’ where the zebra had a keyboard maine. Incredible.

Centum City also had this artsy skull statue...

No rooftop department store playground is complete without an artsy skull statue

Have a great week everyone! And, as always, we love to here from you so comment below!
