The Great Wall continued…

So I hope you enjoyed last weeks rather narrative account of my sunrise excursion onto the Great Wall. And, I hope it got you excited to hear about this most dream-like of Great Wall destinations! Because today I am going to, hopefully, persuade you, with some wise advice and some beautiful photos, that this is THE best place to go trekking on the outrageously majestic Great Wall of China.

So, if you are headed to China, and want to see the Great Wall (which, of course, you will!), then I urge you, with every fiber of my being, to go to Gubeikou and to stay in the Great Wall Box House Hotel. It will probably be the most rewarding experience of your whole trip to China. Seriously.

Gubeikou, where The Great Wall of our dreams was found

Someone shook me from my short slumber. ‘Let’s go watch the sunrise on the Wall’, they said. I rubbed my eyes with the backs of my hands, digesting the proposed plan. I looked at the clock; it was 2.45am. ‘Ok, yeh, absolutely’.

After a much needed caffeine and sugar boost, we set off out of the hostel and through the dusty streets of Gubeikou. Jumpers zipped all the way up and headlamps alight, we began stumbling up the hundreds of steps in the murky darkness to reach the start of our destination- the Great Wall of China…

Top tips on travelling tourist China

So, as promised at the end of my what makes China a perfect travel destination post I’m going to give you some tips on travelling in China.  Many of these tips are very obvious and are generally good tips for travelling anywhere, and some are more specific. What I hope they’ll give you is a little more understanding of what to expect when travelling in China, and indeed other destinations, and also how to deal with situations that may be less than pleasant.
